Area Police
Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then located multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure stated the incident left him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
